LOCATION, AREA AND POPULATION

  • The Town and Commune of Ustrzyki Dolne are located in South-Eastern Poland, at the foot of the Bieszczady mountain range. They border the Ukraine in the East; whilst the western border consists of the shoreline of Lake Solina, which is the largest dam in Poland.
  • The area of the Commune amounts to 478 km2; its population consists of 18,410 inhabitants, of which 10,152 individuals (55.1%) live in towns and 8,258 individuals (44.9%) in villages.
  • As an urban population prevails, the Commune of Ustrzyki Dolne as a whole is of a urban character.
  • Ustrzyki Dolne is a district town and due to its population and economic potential as well as its administrative functions it is the local center for the neighboring communes of Czarna, Solina, Olszanica, Tyrawa Wołoska, Bircza and Fredropol.
  • About 70% of the Commune's area is covered with forests - a significant percentage devoted to mixed mature forest of substantial economic value.
  • Near to the town is a European watershed with the River Strawiąż, which flows through the town, being the only Polish river to drain into the catchment basin that ultimately empties into the Black Sea.
  • Due to the influence of the continental climate the Commune has specific climatic conditions, which results in a relatively long period when the area is covered with snow. These climatic conditions and the mountain location favor winter sports, which is why Ustrzyki Dolne is called "the winter capital of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship".

  • The districts numerous natural features, educational values and rich topographical profile resulting from the Commune's location at the base of the Bieszczady Mountains make it a perfect place for lengthy stays and mountain walking.
  • The proximity of the border with the Ukraine and the districts favorable location in terms of communication, attracting traffic together with it being a crossroad for the "small and large Bieszczady loop", as well as the vicinity of Solińa Lake are additional attractive tourist elements. 
  • The development of tourism has been positively influenced by infrastructure - municipal infrastructure of Ustrzyki Dolne and the tourist infrastructure, namely: numerous tourist routes, ecological paths, biking routes, ski routes and ski lifts, etc.
  • These are good foundations for the efficient operation of larger investment projects, such as recreational complexes, pensions and hotels, which grant a high quality of protection of natural environment.
